Yogyakarta, Central Java — The Special Region of Yogyakarta (DIY) is renowned as an autonomous region that upholds local cultural values. Not only is DIY currently led by a Sultan, but the ecosystem within the region actively preserves culture, including in the infrastructure sector.

This cultural preservation is exemplified through ornamental elements at the Purwomartani toll gate, which features Javanese script, known as Hanacaraka. The Trans-Java 2026 Expedition team visited the Purwomartani toll gate on Tuesday (10 March 2026), which will operate during the 2026 Lebaran exodus and return periods.

The Hanacaraka ornaments are installed directly beside the “Purwomartani Toll Gate” inscription. The Javanese script depicts the meaning of “Purwomartani”. Additionally, logos for the Ministry of Public Works (PU), the Indonesia Future Investment Management Agency (BPI Danantara), and PT Jasa Marga (Persero) Tbk, the toll road operator for the Solo-Yogyakarta-NYIA Kulonprogo toll road, are also displayed.

Yhanni Haryanto, Finance Director of PT Jasamarga Jogja Solo, explained that the installation of Hanacaraka at the Purwomartani toll gate reflects the spirit of a toll road that spans two provinces—Central Java and DIY—both rich in cultural value. However, PT Jasamarga Jogja Solo coordinated with the DIY regional government regarding the installation of the Hanacaraka ornaments on this new infrastructure.

“So we hope the toll gate will sufficiently reflect and further highlight the local character,” he stated.

During the 2026 Lebaran exodus, PT Jasamarga Jogja Solo will operate the functional section of the Yogyakarta-Solo toll road from Prambanan to Purwomartani throughout the exodus period. The 12.225-kilometre section will open toll-free to facilitate smooth traffic flow. Haryanto added that the section remains under construction, so road users are advised to exercise caution whilst travelling through the area.
