Jatiwaringin Landfill Still Ablaze, Firefighting to Continue on Third Day

The Jatiwaringin landfill (TPA) in Tangerang Regency, Banten, has continued to burn since Tuesday, 30 June 2026. Firefighters from the Tangerang Regency fire service will resume extinguishing efforts on Thursday morning, the third day of the blaze. “Spraying at TJW was halted [Wednesday night] and will continue tomorrow [Thursday morning],” a Tangerang Regency fire officer said when contacted in the early hours of Thursday (2/7/2026). The officer stated the fire at the landfill remains unextinguished. Two water-bombing helicopters are to be deployed to assist the firefighting operation. Previously, the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) revealed there were obstacles in tackling the flames at the Jatiwaringin landfill, including the dry season and strong winds. “It has not been extinguished to date due to strong winds in the Jatiwaringin landfill area,” said BNPB Director of Operations Control Coordination, Brigadier General TNI Djohan Darmawan, on Wednesday (1/7) evening. Djohan said 10 fire engines were deployed that night to extinguish the flames. Personnel are maximising the use of water hoses from the fire engines to reduce the hotspots. The BNPB had also provided two water-bombing helicopters to assist the firefighting process. Djohan said the helicopter operation was halted at 18.00 WIB and will resume the following morning. “Up until 18.00, the water-bombing operation was carried out, with one helicopter having conducted firefighting. It will continue tomorrow with two water-bombing helicopter units,” he said. “So, firefighting efforts tonight will remain on standby with 10 fire engines. Our colleagues from the fire service are using hoses to extinguish the burning flames,” Djohan continued. He explained that 30 families have been evacuated so far due to the fire at the Jatiwaringin landfill. The local government has also prepared a health team to check on the condition of residents in the surrounding area.
