Jatiwaringin Landfill Fire Update: Blaze Still Uncontained, Crews Surrounded by Smoke

The fire that has engulfed the Jatiwaringin Final Disposal Site (TPA) in Tangerang Regency, Banten, remained unextinguished as of this afternoon. The fire points are still located in the central area of the landfill. “There is no further spread of the fire points, but the position in the middle is unreachable by personnel, so extinguishing is being carried out using a helicopter unit,” said a call centre officer from the Tangerang Regency Fire Department when contacted at 18.00 WIB on Wednesday (1/7/2026). A total of 10 fire engine units have been deployed to the location this afternoon. The extinguishing process is currently being assisted by a water bombing helicopter from the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB). “This afternoon it is still being handled with assistance from the Provincial BPBD and the water bombing helicopter; currently, the handling is being done by the helicopter unit,” he said. The fire points are still burning in the central area of the Jatiwaringin TPA. Officers are also unable to enter the area because they are obstructed by smoke. “The first obstacle is that the burning area is quite extensive. Then, the points in the central position are unreachable because personnel cannot reach the central point; we are also surrounded by smoke,” explained the Tangerang Regency Fire Department. The Tangerang Regency Government and the Banten Province have raised the status to emergency response because the fire is spreading. “We have determined that this has entered the emergency category. Because this concerns public health issues and also the risk of the fire continuing to spread, we have decided this,” said Tangerang Regent Moch Maesyal Rasyid in Tangerang, as reported by Antara on Wednesday (1/7/2026). He stated that the determination of the status upgrade was based on the results of an evaluation meeting on the landfill fire management since Tuesday (30/6), together with the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), the Environmental and Hygiene Service (DLHK), and related agencies. He declared that he had issued a regent’s decree regarding the upgrade of the disaster management status. “This is a consideration because the definite impact is smoke. This smoke is carried by the wind and is very close to residential areas,” he said. Furthermore, according to him, the status upgrade was carried out based on several indicators, such as the increase in the fire area, a surge in the number of fire points, the dry season forecast, personnel capability, and the scope of the incident’s impact. “With this situation, the plan is for the BNPB helicopter to assist in water bombing from above because there are locations that cannot be entered by vehicles,” he stated. He hopes that the status upgrade will maximise the efforts to tackle the landfill fire, thereby involving all parties. “We ask for assistance from all parties to handle this issue so that the fire can be extinguished immediately, including efforts to prevent public health problems,” he said.
