Jatiwaringin Landfill Fire Update: Blaze Still Uncontained, Crews Surrounded by Smoke
The fire engulfing the Jatiwasting landfill in Tangerang Regency, Banten, has not yet been extinguished as of this afternoon. The fire remains concentrated in the central area of the landfill.
“There has been no expansion of the fire’s perimeter, but the central position is unreachable by ground personnel, so firefighting is being conducted using helicopter units,” stated a Tangerang Regency Fire Department call centre official when contacted at 6:00 PM WIB on Wednesday (1/7/2026).
A total of 10 fire engines have been deployed to the site this afternoon. The extinguishing process is also being assisted by BNPB water-bombing helicopters.
“This afternoon, efforts are ongoing with assistance from the Provincial BPBD and helicopters (water bombing); currently, the helicopter units are handling the situation,” the official added.
The fire is still burning in the central area of the Jatiwaringin landfill. Personnel are unable to enter this specific area due to being obstructed by thick smoke.
“The primary obstacle is the vast area affected by the fire. Furthermore, the central points are unreachable because personnel cannot access them, and we are surrounded by smoke,” explained the Tangerang Regency Fire Department.
Emergency Status
The fire at the Jatiwaringin landfill in Tangerang Regency, Banten, remains active. The Tangerang Regency Government has raised the emergency response status due to the spreading fire.
“We have determined that this has entered the emergency category. This is because it concerns public health issues and the risk of the fire continuing to spread,” said the Regent of Tangerang, Moch Maesyal Rasyid, in Tangerang, as reported by Antara on Wednesday (1/7/2026).
He stated that the decision to upgrade the status was based on an evaluation meeting regarding the landfill fire management held since Tuesday (30/6), involving the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), the Department of Environment and Cleanliness (DLHK), and other relevant agencies.
He confirmed that a regent’s decree has been issued regarding the upgrade of the disaster management status.
“This was considered necessary because there is a definite impact from the smoke. This smoke is being carried by the wind and is very close to residential areas,” he said.
Furthermore, he noted that the status upgrade was based on several indicators, such as the increasing area of the fire, a surge in the number of fire points, the dry season forecast, personnel capacity, and the scope of the incident’s impact.
“Given the situation, the plan is for BNPB helicopters to assist in spraying the fire from above, as there are locations that vehicles cannot enter,” he said.
He expressed hope that the upgraded status would maximise firefighting efforts and ensure the involvement of all parties.
“We request assistance from all parties to handle this issue so that the fire can be extinguished quickly, including efforts to protect public health,” he concluded.
