Jatiwaringin Landfill Fire Still Raging After 24 Hours, Here Are the Obstacles

A fire at the Jatiwaringin Final Disposal Site (TPA) in Tangerang Regency, Banten, has yet to be extinguished. Firefighting efforts have been ongoing for more than 24 hours. “It is not yet out,” said Brigadier General TNI Djohan Darmawan, Director of Operations Control at the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), when contacted on Wednesday (1/7/2026) at 11.50 WIB. The fire was first reported on Tuesday (30/6) at 11.10 WIB. Djohan stated that the numerous fire spots and the current dry season are hindering the extinguishing process. “There are many fire spots, so 10 fire engines have been deployed—belonging to the regional government and the Indonesian Army—to prevent the fire from spreading further, as far as they can reach,” he said. Additionally, the presence of many rubbish trucks along the route to the landfill is creating an obstacle. Personnel are currently battling to extinguish the flames. “The temporary obstacle is that if you use a fire engine, it is quite far to draw water. The access road into the site is also rather narrow because of all the rubbish trucks. I have also said that if possible, these rubbish trucks that are unloading should leave first so that the fire engines can move more easily,” he explained. Djohan added that two water-bombing helicopters have also been deployed from Jambi and Palembang to Jatiwaringin. The helicopters will later help extinguish the remaining flames at the location. “They will arrive at Pondok Cabe at around 1 pm today to install the bracket. The bracket is for collecting water. They will collect water from a lake in the Jatiwaringin area, here in Tangerang,” he added.
