Jatiwaringin Landfill Fire Still Raging After 24 Hours, Here Are the Obstacles

The fire engulfing the Jatiwaringin Landfill in Tangerang Regency, Banten, has yet to be extinguished. The firefighting process has now lasted for more than 24 hours.

“It has not been extinguished,” said Brigadier General TNI Djohan Darmawan, Director of Coordination for BNPB Operations Control, when contacted on Wednesday (1/7/2026) at 11:50 WIB.

For context, the fire was first reported on Tuesday (30/6) at 11:10 WIB. Djohan stated that the high number of active fire spots, exacerbated by the dry season, is a major obstacle to the extinguishing process.

“There are many fire spots, which is why 10 fire engines from the Local Government and the Indonesian Army (TNI AD) have been deployed to prevent the fire from spreading further within their reachable range,” he said.

Additionally, the presence of numerous waste collection trucks along the route to the landfill is causing significant delays. Personnel are currently struggling to carry out firefighting operations.

“The temporary obstacle is that the water suction distance for the fire engines is quite far. Furthermore, the access roads are narrow because of the high volume of waste trucks. I have suggested that the waste disposal trucks should clear the area first to allow for better mobility for the fire engines,” he explained.

Djohan added that two water-bombing helicopters have been flown from Jambi and Palembang to Jatiwaringin. These helicopters will be deployed to tackle the remaining flames at the site.

“They are expected to arrive at Pondok Cabe around 1:00 PM today to install the brackets. These brackets are used for water collection. They will then collect water from the lake located in the Jatiwaringin area, Tangerang,” he added.
