Jatiwaringin Landfill Fire in Tangerang Fully Extinguished
The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) has announced that the main area of the Jatiwaringin Final Disposal Site (TPA) in Mauk District, Tangerang Regency, Banten, has finally been extinguished. The fire affected an estimated area of approximately 15 hectares. Abdul Muhari, Head of the BNPB Data, Information and Disaster Communication Centre, stated that this success was the result of hard work and collaboration by the joint emergency response team. The firefighting operation had been running intensively since the incident was reported on 30 June until Thursday evening (9/7). “The main 15-hectare area of the Jatiwaringin TPA affected by the fire has been reported as 100 per cent extinguished and is currently in an intensive cooling phase,” Abdul said in Jakarta on Friday (10/7). Abdul explained that although the main area within the TPA is under control, the joint team on the ground remains on standby. Precautionary measures are still being taken to sweep for potential hotspots and thin plumes of smoke detected in the disposal area outside the TPA boundary. “The joint team is still anticipating hotspots and thin smoke plumes detected in the waste disposal area outside the TPA near a small lake,” he said. Regarding social conditions on the ground, the BNPB team confirmed that the situation for communities around the TPA has returned to normal. The number of evacuees is currently reported as nil because all residents have been facilitated to return to their respective homes. The acceleration of this emergency response was legally supported by Tangerang Regent Decree Number 609 of 2026 concerning the Emergency Response Status and Decree Number 613/2026 concerning the Emergency Response Task Force. In this operation, BNPB provided full support by deploying four water-bombing helicopters to douse the hotspots with hundreds of thousands of litres of water. Three helicopters—a Mi-8AMT, a Sikorsky UH60A, and a Sikorsky UH60L—were reported to be operating optimally in rotation over Tangerang. Meanwhile, one Mi-8 MSBT helicopter is undergoing technical repairs. In addition to aerial operations, BNPB also distributed emergency ground logistics. The aid included 500 litres of Enviro Class A Foam fire suppressant, dozens of mini pump units, fire hoses, and handy talkie communication devices. As a form of social and safety concern, the central government, through BNPB, also handed over 100 basic food packages for affected residents and 150 pairs of operational boots for field personnel. “The emergency firefighting response at the Jatiwaringin TPA has reached 100 percent and the social condition of the surrounding community is reported to be conducive with the number of evacuees currently nil, as all residents have been facilitated to return to their respective homes,” Abdul concluded.
