Jatiwaringin Landfill Fire Extinguished, Ministry Continues Monitoring for Hidden Hotspots

The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) has stated that the fire at the Jatiwaringin Landfill (TPA) in Mauk District, Tangerang Regency, Banten, has been completely extinguished. However, the Ministry of Environment (KLH) is still monitoring the potential for hidden fires beneath the surface of the waste piles. “There is no more fire or smoke on the surface. Fires below the surface are also no longer detected,” said Deputy Minister of Environment Diaz Hendropriyono to reporters on Saturday. Diaz explained that the thermal drones operated by the KLH can only detect hotspots up to a few metres below the surface. The Jatiwaringin landfill spans approximately 33 hectares with varying depths of accumulated waste. “The thermal drones we are operating can only penetrate a few metres in depth. Meanwhile, this TPA Jatiwaringin, with an area of 33 hectares, has varying depths or heights, possibly reaching 20-30 metres due to the accumulation of waste,” he explained. “Because the area has been doused with water for several days, we do not know if there is still fire at certain depths that were not reached by water. Therefore, we will continue to monitor the situation going forward,” he added. Diaz further stated that the KLH is continuing to monitor air quality around the site. He noted that air quality in the area has currently declined. “Regarding air monitoring, the KLH’s air monitoring equipment remains at the location. Currently, the average concentration of PM 2.5 has significantly decreased to 172.84 (8 July) and 117.03 (9 July),” he explained. Diaz also urged local governments to continue implementing the directives of the Minister of Environment as outlined in Circular Letter Number 11 of 2026 to anticipate fire incidents. Regarding the investigation into the cause of the fire, Diaz said the Deputy for Law Enforcement of the KLH, along with relevant officials, will conduct field verification once conditions at the landfill are more conducive. “For the investigation, Police Inspector General Rizal, the Deputy for Law Enforcement, reported that they will begin field verification after the conditions at the TPA are more conducive. We will see how it develops,” he said. Previously, the BNPB stated that the main area of the Jatiwaringin landfill affected by the fire, covering approximately 15 hectares, had finally been extinguished. The fire was put out after ten days. Head of the BNPB Data, Information and Disaster Communication Centre Abdul Muhari said the fire was successfully extinguished thanks to the hard work and collaboration of the joint emergency response team from the time the incident was reported on 30 June until Thursday night.
