Jatiwaringin Landfill Fire Enters Tenth Day, Smoke Still Billowing

Firefighting operations at the Jatiwaringin landfill in Tangerang Regency, Banten, have entered their tenth day, with efforts still ongoing today. “Firefighting is still underway. Personnel are continuing to work because smoke is still visible,” said an officer from the Tangerang Regency Fire Department’s Emergency Operations Centre when contacted on Thursday (9/7/2026).

Photographs and video footage from the scene show firefighters on location, with smoke continuing to billow from the area. Heavy machinery has also been deployed to assist in the firefighting process. Three helicopters were again mobilised this morning to support the operation. The firefighting continues because hotspots were still visible last night. “Last night, fire was still visible at several points; it was clearly seen during the night,” the officer added.

Previously, the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) reported that 49 per cent of the affected area had been successfully extinguished based on operations conducted on Tuesday (7/7). Combined tactical measures continue to be accommodated to localise and extinguish hotspots, both via ground and aerial operations. Joint personnel from BNPB, relevant ministries, local government, the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI), the Indonesian National Police (Polri), and private entities are still working together to put out the fire. To overcome the challenges of difficult terrain and hotspots unreachable by ground fire hoses, BNPB has deployed a fleet of helicopters to strengthen aerial firefighting. “We are overcoming the existing obstacles by bringing in four water-bombing helicopters to tackle sectors that cannot be reached by ground firefighters. So, we are dousing them from the air,” explained Djohan.
