Jatiwaringin Landfill Fire 40% Extinguished, Additional Water-Bombing Helicopters Deployed
The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) has recorded that 40 per cent of the burnt area at the Jatiwaringin landfill in Tangerang Regency has been extinguished. Officers are continuing their efforts to extinguish the remainder.
“Currently, 40% of the burnt area has been extinguished and is undergoing cooling processes. Firefighting efforts via both land and air routes are still being carried out for the remaining 60% of the burnt area, which, although under control, has not yet been fully extinguished,” said the Head of the BNPB Data, Information, and Disaster Communication Centre, Abdul Muhari, in a statement on Sunday (5/7/2026).
Abdul explained that so far, efforts to extinguish the fire have involved two helicopters. The number will be increased tomorrow to a total of four helicopters.
“BNPB will add 2 water-bombing helicopter units, bringing the total to 4 units, which will be repositioned tomorrow to accelerate the firefighting efforts,” he stated.
Regarding weather modification operations (OMC), these cannot be implemented for the next week. However, one aircraft for OMC remains on standby.
“Weather modification operations are not yet possible for the next 7 days due to the lack of adequate rain clouds. Nevertheless, BNPB maintains 1 OMC aircraft on standby, ready to operate if rain clouds become available,” he added.
As is known, the fire at the Jatiwaringin landfill in Tangerang Regency, Banten, has been burning since last Tuesday (30/6). The Tangerang Regency Government has declared an emergency response status as the fire continues to spread.
A total of 232 local residents have been evacuated. The total area of the landfill affected by the fire is approximately 15 hectares.
The Deputy Minister of Environment, Diaz Faisal Malik Hendropriyono, personally inspected the fire site on Saturday (4/7) afternoon. During the inspection, the Deputy of Law Enforcement at the Ministry of Environment, Rizal Irawan, presented the latest data regarding the expansion of the fire hotspots to Diaz.
“With your permission, Mr. Deputy Minister, I will explain the latest condition regarding the monitoring object, which is the Jatiwaringin landfill, located in Mauk District, Tangerang Regency. The total area of this landfill is approximately 33 hectares,” said Rizal Irawan at the location on Saturday (4/7/2026).
He explained that based on monitoring until last night, the fire had scorched almost half of the total landfill area.
“From the total area of 33 hectares, as of last night, the burnt area was estimated to be 15 hectares as of the night of 3 July. It has now spread to 15 hectares,” he clarified.
