Jatiwaringin Landfill Fire 40% Extinguished, Additional Water-Bombing Helicopters Deployed

The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) has recorded that 40 per cent of the area burned at the Jatiwaringin landfill in Tangerang Regency has been extinguished. Officers are continuing efforts to put out the remainder. “Currently, 40 per cent of the burned area has been extinguished and cooling is underway. Firefighting efforts via land and air are still ongoing for the remaining 60 per cent of the burned area, which has not yet been extinguished but is under control,” said Abdul Muhari, Head of the BNPB Data, Information and Communication Centre, in a statement on Sunday (5/7/2026). Abdul explained that two helicopters have been deployed to extinguish the fire. The number will be increased tomorrow, bringing the total to four. “BNPB will add two water-bombing helicopters, making a total of four units, which will be repositioned tomorrow to accelerate the extinguishing process,” he revealed. Weather modification operations (OMC) cannot be carried out for the next week. However, one aircraft for OMC remains on standby. “Weather modification operations are not feasible for the next seven days due to a lack of adequate rain clouds. Nevertheless, BNPB is keeping one OMC aircraft on standby, ready to operate if rain clouds become available,” he stated. The fire at the Jatiwaringin landfill, Tangerang Regency, Banten, has been burning since Tuesday (30/6). The Tangerang Regency Government has declared a state of emergency as the fire has spread. A total of 232 local residents have been evacuated. The total area of the landfill affected by the fire is approximately 15 hectares. Deputy Minister of Environment, Diaz Faisal Malik Hendropriyono, visited the fire site on Saturday (4/7) afternoon. During the visit, the Ministry of Environment’s Deputy for Law Enforcement, Rizal Irawan, presented the latest data on the spread of hotspots to Diaz. “With your permission, Deputy Minister, I will explain the latest conditions regarding the monitoring object, namely the Jatiwaringin landfill, located in Mauk District, Tangerang Regency. The total area of this landfill is approximately 33 hectares,” said Rizal Irawan at the location on Saturday (4/7/2026). He explained that based on monitoring up to last night, the fire had scorched nearly half of the landfill’s total area. “Out of the 33-hectare area, as of last night, the burned area was estimated to have reached 15 hectares, as of the night of 3 July. It has now spread to 15 hectares,” he clarified.
