Jatinegara street vendors evicted

JAKARTA: East Jakarta Public Order officers evicted street vendors from the Jatinegara market area early on Monday. Beginning at 1 a.m., the operation ran smoothly although some vendors sat in the middle of the road in an attempt to block the officers.

Mahadi, one of the civilian guards, said the evictions had been taking place since late December.

The Public Order Office has taken action against street vendors accused of violating Bylaw No. 11/2000 on public order.

Antara reported that around 200 personnel from the office -- consisting of members of the Army, Jakarta Police, Civilian Guards, Jakarta Sanitation Agency and Fire Agency -- took part in the eviction. Nine garbage trucks were observed removing the vendors' belongings. -- JP
