Jati Pinggir Green Open Space to Feature Public Facilities and Culinary Centre

Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Central Jakarta Parks and Urban Forestry Sub-agency will develop the Banjir Kanal Barat (BKB) river buffer zone in Jati Pinggir, Petamburan, into a green open space equipped with sports facilities, a multi-purpose area and a culinary zone.

Head of the Central Jakarta Parks and Urban Forestry Sub-agency, Mila Ananda, said the arrangement is an effort to restore the river buffer’s function as a green corridor that can be utilised by the public.

“This is a functional restoration activity. River buffers should be green corridors. It will later be used as a space for public interaction, so that anyone can use this location according to its designation as green open space,” said Mila in Jakarta on Wednesday.

She explained that the development covers the Jati Pinggir area from around the railway tracks to the Textile Museum, stretching about one kilometre with a width varying between 7 and 11 metres, or roughly 7,000 square metres in total.

Under the plan, the government will also build a semi-permanent multi-purpose space that residents can use for various community activities.

In addition, the area will be equipped with children’s play facilities and sports amenities, while two of the three existing sports fields will be retained.

According to Mila, the potential views of Central Jakarta’s high-rises, or city views, will also be leveraged as one of the area’s attractions so that it becomes a new public space icon in Central Jakarta.

She emphasised that the arrangement also accommodates street vendors who have been operating at the location. After a curation process with the relevant regional agencies, vendors will be placed in a semi-permanent multi-storey building.

“For now, the capacity is around 20 vendors. We are also preparing space for expansion if there is CSR support in the future for developing the culinary area,” she said.

Mila revealed that the project is the result of lengthy discussions with the community through forums held from October to November last year, involving neighbourhood units (RT), community units (RW), the local community organisation LMK, vendors and local community organisations.

The work contract has been signed, and the project will be implemented under the Central Jakarta Parks and Urban Forestry Sub-agency.

The government targets to complete all development work by November 2026 so that the new green open space can soon be enjoyed by the public.
