The transportation safety approach is deemed necessary to shift from a reactive to a preventive, data-based model to suppress accident rates and victim fatalities.

This was conveyed by Jasa Raharja’s President Director, Muhammad Awaluddin, during the ‘Transportation Safety Discussion’ that brought together Pentahelix stakeholders in Makassar, South Sulawesi.

The forum served as a space for collaboration to strengthen integrated efforts in preventing traffic accidents across South Sulawesi.

In his presentation, Awaluddin revealed that based on first-quarter 2026 data, compensation values in South Sulawesi increased by 11.14% compared to the same period the previous year. The number of traffic accidents also rose by around 8%, reaching more than 2,000 cases.

Nationally, IRSMS data from Korlantas Polri records over 151,000 accidents with more than 217,000 victims annually, with a continuing upward trend each year.

Awaluddin emphasised that Jasa Raharja’s role extends beyond disbursing compensation; it is also part of the accident prevention ecosystem. These efforts include mapping accident-prone spots (blackspots), segmented education, and enhancing first-response capacity in the field.

“Accidents are not merely about loss of life. Most victims are of productive age and family breadwinners, leading to changes in socio-economic structures that impact the families left behind,” said Awaluddin in a written statement on Tuesday (14/4/2026).

“The current approach remains heavily focused on handling incidents, while accident patterns continue to repeat. We aim to drive a shift from reactive to preventive through an integrated system,” he added.

Meanwhile, South Sulawesi Police Traffic Director, Senior Commissioner Pol. Pria Budi, stated that although accidents increased by 8%, the fatality rate was successfully reduced by 24%, from 234 deaths in the first quarter of 2025 to 179 in the same period of 2026.

From the data, 74% of accidents were single-vehicle incidents, with 78% involving motorcycles. Most accidents occurred between 15:00 and 18:00 WITA, typically under clear weather and good road conditions.

South Sulawesi Police has also mapped accident-prone areas in several regions, with the highest concentrations in Makassar, Maros, Barru, and Pangkep. Additionally, law enforcement is supported by 89 ETLE units, comprising 14 static units and 74 handheld units.

“Many lives are lost not due to the accident itself, but because of delayed initial handling. Safety does not end with prevention but also involves the quality of response during and immediately after the accident,” stressed Senior Commissioner Pol. Pria firmly.

“The faster the handling within the golden period, the greater the victim’s chances of survival,” he continued.

The forum also produced several agreements, including strengthening interactive road safety education at accident-prone spots, expanding the E-PELANTAS programme to all districts/cities in South Sulawesi, and integrating SIM-RS with the JR Care platform to accelerate Guarantee Letter issuance for accident victims.

Additionally, training in First Aid Emergency Care (PPGD) for driver communities as first responders was proposed to reduce fatalities during initial handling.

From an infrastructure perspective, the South Sulawesi Provincial Public Works Department plans maintenance and upgrades for 1,000 km of roads in the 2025-2027 period. Meanwhile, the Provincial Transportation Department aims to add public transport corridors from two to three.

Jasa Raharja views such collaborative forums as essential for building a data- and locally conditioned transportation safety roadmap.

Traffic safety issues cannot be resolved partially but require synergy and collective efforts from all stakeholders.

For information, the discussion held at the Jasa Raharja South Sulawesi Regional Office featured several speakers, including South Sulawesi Police Traffic Director Senior Commissioner Pol. Dr. Pria Budi, as well as representatives from the Education Department, Transportation Department, Health Department, Class II BPTD South Sulawesi, BBPJN South Sulawesi, Provincial Public Works Department, South Sulawesi DPD Organda, PT Makassar Metro Network, Wahidin Sudirohusodo Hospital, Makassar Hospital, online motorcycle taxi communities, and academics from Hasanuddin University, Bosowa University, Fajar University, and Handayani University.
