Jakarta (ANTARA) - Jasa Raharja’s President Director, Muhammad Awaluddin, emphasised that traffic accidents not only result in loss of life but also generate social and economic impacts for the families left behind by the victims.

“Most of those involved in accidents are of productive age and family heads, thus causing changes in the socio-economic structure that impact the families left behind,” Awaluddin stated during the Transportation Safety Discussion bringing together Penta Helix stakeholders in Makassar, South Sulawesi, as per information received in Jakarta on Tuesday.

This situation leads to changes in the family’s social and economic structure, including a decline in income and an increase in the living burden on other family members, especially if the victim is the family head as the economic backbone.

Therefore, Jasa Raharja is pushing for a shift in the accident handling approach from responsive to preventive through strengthening integrated systems to sustainably prevent similar incidents.

“The current approach is still dominated by handling, while accident patterns continue to repeat. We want to encourage a shift from responsive to preventive through integrated system work,” he asserted.

Awaluddin admitted that his side is strengthening data-based prevention approaches through multi-party collaboration to reduce accident numbers, fatalities, and the broad socio-economic impacts on society.

“The transportation safety approach needs to shift from the previously responsive to preventive based on data to reduce accident numbers and victim fatalities,” he said.

According to him, the forum serves as a space for collaboration to strengthen integrated traffic accident prevention efforts, particularly in South Sulawesi.

Furthermore, Awaluddin revealed that based on first quarter 2026 data, the compensation value in South Sulawesi increased by 11.14 percent compared to the same period the previous year.

The number of traffic accidents also rose by around 8 percent to more than 2,000 cases. However, he did not provide detailed information on this.

Nationally, Awaluddin continued, data from the Indonesian National Police Traffic Corps’ Integrated Road Safety Management System (IRSMS) records more than 151,000 accident incidents with over 217,000 victims per year, with a trend that continues to increase annually.

He emphasised that Jasa Raharja’s role is not limited to disbursing compensation but also as part of the accident prevention ecosystem.

These efforts are carried out through mapping accident-prone points (blackspots), segmented education, and improving first-response capacity in the field.

Jasa Raharja views the collaborative forum as important for building a data-based and locally conditioned transportation safety roadmap.

Traffic safety issues are deemed unable to be resolved partially but require synergy and joint commitment from all stakeholders.

At the same location, the Director of Traffic (Dirlantas) of the South Sulawesi Police, Commissioner Pol. Pria Budi, stated that although the number of accidents in the area increased by 8 percent, the fatality rate of deaths was successfully reduced by 24 percent, from 234 people in the first quarter of 2025 to 179 people in the same period of 2026.

From that data, 74 percent of accidents were single-vehicle accidents, with 78 percent of vehicles involved being motorcycles. Accidents most frequently occurred between 15:00 and 18:00 WITA, generally under clear weather conditions and good roads.

The local police have also mapped accident-prone points in several areas, with the highest concentration in Makassar, Maros, Barru, and Pangkep.

In addition, law enforcement is supported by 89 ETLE units consisting of 14 static units and 74 handheld units.

“Safety does not stop at prevention but also at the quality of handling at the time and immediately after the accident occurs,” he asserted.

The forum also produced several agreements, including strengthening interactive driving safety education at accident-prone points, to training in Emergency First Aid (PPGD) for driver communities as first responders, to reduce victim fatalities in the initial handling period.

The forum was attended by representatives from the Education Office, Transportation Office, Health Office, Class II BPTD of South Sulawesi Province, BBPJN South Sulawesi, South Sulawesi Road Infrastructure Office, South Sulawesi DPD Organda, PT Makassar Metro Network, Wahidin Sudirohusodo Hospital, Makassar Central Hospital, online motorcycle taxi communities, as well as academics from various universities in the area.
