Tokyo (ANTARA) - Japan’s Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications released the finalised results of the 2025 census on Tuesday (29/09), recording the total population of the Land of the Rising Sun, including foreign residents, at approximately 122.97 million as of 1 October 2025. This represents a decrease of about 3.17 million people, or 2.5 per cent, compared to 2020.

Japan’s population has experienced a decline in three consecutive five-year censuses, following the first recorded decrease in 2015.

Based on gender, the male population was recorded at approximately 59.77 million, while the female population stood at approximately 6lar63.2 million.

Residents aged 65 and over accounted for a record high of 29.4 per cent of the total population, confirming the demographic pressure facing Japan’s rapidly ageing society.

Among Japan’s 47 prefectures, Tokyo was the only one to record population growth from the previous 2020 census, with an increase of approximately 189,000 people.
