Japan's gratitude
Japan's gratitude
The big earthquake that severely jolted the southern part of
Hyogo Prefecture in the early morning of Jan. 17, 1995 wrecked
havoc far beyond our imagination. Heartwarming expressions of
sympathy and condolences and assistance came from all over the
world, especially from the Indonesian government and people.
The goodwill so expressed has encouraged us, both those who
suffered and those who escaped, and has rekindled in our heart
the hope and determination to rise up from the ruins. Our people
will forever acknowledge, appreciate, and remember the importance
of the friendship and solidarity which the Indonesian government
and people have so generously extended to us.
To the government and people of the Republic of Indonesia who
have kindly offered not only sympathy but also practical relief
and assistance, I, in my capacity as Ambassador of Japan, wish to
express my high appreciation and my most profound gratitude.
TAIZO WATANABE
