Japan's foreign minister to visit Indonesia

TOKYO (AFP): Japanese Foreign Minister Masahiko Komura plans to visit Indonesia in late July to hold talks with President B.J. Habibie, a news report said Saturday.

Komura will fly to Jakarta from Singapore, where he is to attend an expanded foreign ministers' meeting of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, Japan Broadcasting Corp. (NHK) said.

Komura and Habibie are expected to discuss the East Timor issue, the national television network said. Japan will send police officers to Indonesia to help the country carry out polls on autonomy in East Timor in August.

During the planned meeting with Habibie, the Japanese foreign minister will underline Tokyo's support for Jakarta's economic reforms, NHK said. Japan is the largest donor nation for Indonesia.
