Japan's Disaster-Ready Public Toilets Operate Without Water or Electricity
Meguro district in Tokyo, Japan, has installed public toilets that operate without water or electricity in public parks. These facilities remain functional during natural disasters such as earthquakes. Tokyo faces a high risk of major earthquakes, with many residents likely to be displaced in such an event. The local government has therefore constructed these toilets to meet citizens’ urgent sanitation needs. The system uses advanced waste treatment technology. Beneficial microorganisms break down human waste, while UV lamps sterilise pathogens. The treated waste is then recycled as flushing water. For power, solar panels charge large backup batteries during daylight, ensuring operation even during complete city power outages. The toilets can handle 4,000 consecutive uses and are mobile; they can be transported by truck to other disaster-affected areas as needed.
