Japanese taught in Bali

DENPASAR, Bali: As many as 115 senior high schools in the
province have included Japanese in their curricula in
anticipation of the rush of Japanese tourists to the island.

"Students can take Japanese as one of the two foreign
languages taught in senior high schools in the province," Ketut
Sudiarso, chairman of the forum of foreign language teachers in
Bali, said here on Saturday.

He said most students in the province were very interested in
learning Japanese and that many qualified teachers of Japanese
were available.

Director of the Japanese Foundation in Jakarta, Motohiza
Shimizu, stated his appreciation of the high student interest in
Japanese.

He said around 50,000 senior high schools in Indonesia have
added Japanese as the second foreign language taught to their
students, Antara reported yesterday. (rms)
