Tokyo - Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi stated that her country is utilising direct communication channels with Iran to ensure the safety of shipping in the Strait of Hormuz amid rising tensions in the Middle East region.

“We have maintained close communication with Iran at various levels up to now. Expressing concern about the many ships still in the Persian Gulf, including those related to Japan,” she said in response to a question in parliament.

Sanae also said that her side is urging Iran to take appropriate actions to ensure the safety of all ships in the Strait of Hormuz, adding that this direct communication model will continue to be used.

“Through direct channels with Iran, we will continue to seek appropriate steps to ensure safe navigation in the Strait of Hormuz. It is important to ensure the safe navigation of all ships, including Japanese ships in the Strait of Hormuz,” added PM Sanae.

The United States and Israel launched a joint assault on several targets in Iranian territory on 28 February, resulting in infrastructure damage, casualties, and the killing of the then-supreme leader, Ali Khamenei.

The joint US-Israel assault was retaliated by Iran through attacks on Israeli territory and US military facilities in the Middle East as a form of self-defence.

The conflict situation has effectively halted the shipment of logistics as well as crude oil and gas through the Strait of Hormuz - the main route for oil and liquefied natural gas supplies from the Persian Gulf to global markets - thereby triggering surges in fuel prices in most countries around the world.
