Japanese National Found Dead in Room on 25th Floor of Merlyn Park Hotel, Gambir
Jakarta — The morning calm in the Gambir area of Central Jakarta was shattered when a Japanese foreign national was found lifeless in his hotel room on the 25th floor.
The victim, identified by the initials KH (59), was staying in room 2551 of Hotel Merlyn Park on Jalan KH Hasyim Ashari, Petojo Utara. His body was discovered at approximately 07:57 Western Indonesian Time on Wednesday, 18 February 2026.
Gambir Metro Police Chief, Adjunct Senior Commissioner Agus Ady Wijaya, disclosed the condition in which the victim was first found. "He was lying on his back on the bed," he said on Friday, 20 February 2026.
The incident began when a group of 24 Japanese tourists was preparing to continue their itinerary with a visit to Suzuki Indomobil in Tambun, West Java. The group had been staying for two nights, from 17 to 19 February 2026.
However, by morning, three members of the group had yet to come down to the lobby. One of them was the victim.
At approximately 07:44, R, also known as D, a person-in-charge from the Panorama Group travel agency, came down to the lobby to meet the tour guide. Realising the victim had not appeared, D along with SR, a hotel security officer, and the victim's colleague, Mr S, proceeded to the room on the 25th floor at 07:55.
"The door was knocked on but there was no answer," the police chief said.
As the room was locked from the inside, the travel agency requested assistance from hotel management to open the door at approximately 07:56.
"At around 07:57, the victim's colleague Mr S, D from the travel agency, and Merlyn Hotel staff opened the room door to check on the victim but received no response. Witness S then checked the victim's breathing through his nose but there was no response," he said.
The discovery was immediately reported to hotel management and subsequently forwarded to Gambir Metro Police. Officers along with an identification team promptly attended the scene to conduct a preliminary examination.
"The initial external examination by the identification team found no signs of violence," he said.
The victim's body was subsequently transferred to Cipto Mangunkusumo General Hospital (RSCM) at 10:30 for further examination. Gambir Metro Police continue to investigate the case to determine the precise cause of death of the Japanese tourist.
