Japanese National Dies After Being Struck by Truck Load; Karawang Driver Sentenced to 2 Years Imprisonment
A fatal accident involving a Japanese national named Yukihiro Nabae (63) at the Gebang Toll Road in West Karawang has been tried in court. The defendant, Mamat (39), was found guilty and sentenced to two years’ imprisonment.
In the accident on 30 July 2025, Mamat was the driver of a dump truck bearing registration number B 9596 UQA, which was loaded with waste ash from coal combustion (fly ash) weighing 27,640 tonnes. The victim was sitting in the passenger seat of a Toyota Voxy vehicle bearing registration number B 2052 FBB, which was being driven by Abu Aziz.
According to a copy of the ruling from Karawang District Court obtained on Friday, 27 February 2026, the public prosecutor from Karawang District Prosecutor’s Office sought a sentence of four years’ imprisonment for Mamat plus a fine of 5 million rupiah, with an alternative of three months’ imprisonment if the fine remained unpaid, at a hearing on Monday, 22 December 2025.
However, on Wednesday, 21 January 2026, the judge at Karawang District Court applied different considerations. The judge sentenced Mamat to two years’ imprisonment plus a fine of 5 million rupiah, with an alternative of three months’ imprisonment if the fine remained unpaid.
The public prosecutor from Karawang District Prosecutor’s Office subsequently appealed the verdict to the Bandung High Court. Following the case proceedings, the court decided to uphold the original sentence.
“It is declared that the defendant Mamat has been proven beyond reasonable doubt to be guilty of committing the criminal offence of ‘having caused a traffic accident resulting in the death of another person through negligence’, in accordance with the second alternative charge,” stated the Bandung High Court judge’s ruling, as reported.
“The court therefore imposes a sentence of imprisonment for two years upon the defendant and a fine of 5 million rupiah, with the provision that if the fine is not paid, it shall be replaced with three months’ imprisonment,” the judge stated.
