Japanese killed in Batam

BATAM, Riau: A 48-year-old Japanese man, suspected of a hit- and-run accident, died instantly after he crashed into a police car following a two-hour car chase.

Sakanoto Kayuza reportedly fled the scene after he allegedly hit four ojek (motorcycle taxi) drivers. He was then chased by other motorcycle drivers and the local police.

Police fired at Kayuza's car, sending it crashing into another police car before it flipped over near the Nan Tongga Hotel in the Jodoh Batam area.

Barelang deputy police chief Adj. Sr. Commissioner Imam Djauhari confirmed the incident but could not say whether Kayuza died from a gunshot wound or the car crash.

There were no reports on the condition of the four victims in the hit and run. --Antara
