Japanese Foreign Minister Expresses Concern Over UN Effectiveness
Tokyo (ANTARA) - There are several concerns regarding the ability of the United Nations (UN) to respond to international crises, stated Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi. During a meeting of a relevant committee in Japan’s upper house of parliament on Monday, Motegi was questioned regarding the funding of the UN and international organisations, as well as the security functions they support.
“Indeed, questions have been raised as to whether the UN possesses sufficient capacity to respond to various international challenges,” he remarked in response. “Specifically regarding the UN Security Council, there are indications that its ability to prevent and resolve conflicts is declining,” he added.
The Japanese Foreign Minister further noted that while 51 nations were involved in the founding of the UN, the organisation now comprises more than 190 countries. In this context, questions are being raised more loudly as to whether the current Security Council accurately reflects the actual state of the international community, he said.
Motegi added that Tokyo will continue to push for reforms within the UN Security Council and participate in efforts to strengthen multilateral cooperation.
