Japanese firms win RI jobs
TOKYO (AFP): Three major Japanese trading firms have each won orders from the Indonesian government to build thermal power plants in Java by 1997 worth a total 180 billion yen (US$1.8 billion), company spokesmen said yesterday.
Marubeni Corp. will build a 80 billion yen power station with a capacity of 1,100 megawatts in Muara Tawar, West Java, jointly with Asea Brown Boveri AG, a Swiss-Swedish venture and the largest heavy electrical machinery maker in Europe.
Mitsubishi Corp. has won a 60 billion yen contract with Siemens AG and Cockerill Mechanical Industries of Belgium for a 800 megawatt plant in Grati in East Java.
Sumitomo Corp., with General Electric of the United States, was awarded a 40 billion yen order to build additional facilities at Tambak Lorok in Central Java.
The Indonesian government is trying to cope with a serious power shortage in Java due to delays in a a large-scale private electric power project.
