Japanese Firm Invests Rp539 Billion to Build Plasma Industry
The Ministry of Investment and Downstreaming/BKPM has welcomed the investment commitment from Japanese biopharmaceutical firm Takeda for the development of the plasma-derived medicine industry in Indonesia. In the initial phase, the company will invest up to USD30 million, or approximately Rp539 billion, over two years. The investment will focus on building a plasma bank network as the foundation for developing a national plasma industry. The government views this move as a way to strengthen the high-technology health industry domestically. Minister of Investment and Downstreaming/Head of BKPM, Rosan P. Roeslani, stated that Takeda’s investment demonstrates growing confidence from global investors in Indonesia. According to him, this confidence is particularly evident in the prospects for developing the high-technology health industry sector. “This is a strategic investment that opens opportunities for technology transfer, human resource development, and the creation of high-skilled jobs. The government encourages investments that provide added value and strengthen national industrial capacity,” Rosan said. According to Rosan, the collaboration aligns with the economic transformation agenda through downstreaming in strategic sectors, including health. This effort is expected to enhance the competitiveness of national industry while strengthening Indonesia’s position in the global supply chain. BKPM noted that Japan remains one of Indonesia’s main investment partners. In the first quarter of 2026, realised Japanese investment reached USD1 billion, placing it as the fifth largest investor in Indonesia. Meanwhile, from 2021 to the first quarter of 2026, total realised Japanese investment reached USD18.1 billion. This investment grew by an average of 13.2 percent and absorbed approximately 299,460 workers. The government hopes this collaboration will improve public access to plasma-derived medicines while building a competitive biopharmaceutical industry ecosystem. The first plasma bank is targeted to begin operations in 2027, meeting international standards.
