Japanese duo to play Hungarian masterpieces

Tantri Yuliandini, The Jakarta Post, Jakarta

The first of this year's Classical Concert Series will present a piano duo recital featuring Japan's Torie Masako and Fukushi Miwako playing compositions by Hungary's Franz Liszt, Franz Schubert and Johannes Brahms.

To be performed at Dutch Cultural Centre Erasmus Huis on Monday, the duo will play Liszt's Szozat es Magyar Himnusz and Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2, Schubert's Divertissement a la Hongroise Op. 54, and Brahms' Hungarian Dances Nos. 1, 3, 4, 7 and 8.

Torie Masako began studying the piano at the age of four under Kawai Horoe and Mizuta Kaori, and won an award at the Sapporo Arts Festival in 1990. In 2002, Torie moved to Indonesia and has since performed with Fukushi Miwako.

Fukushi Miwako left for Hungary in 1985 to study at the Franz Liszt Academy under Nador Gyorgy for the piano and Horvath Aniko for the harpsichord. She performed at the 1987 Baroque Music Festival in Sopron, Hungary, and was a member of the Franz Liszt Academy Chamber Orchestra.

Since relocating to Indonesia, Fukushi has participated in classical music awareness programs for schoolchildren and has performed with many Indonesian musicians and orchestras.

"We have deliberately chosen this theme because Hungary is the home of several major classical composers who are famous for their masterpieces," said a statement released by organizers M- Project, a non-profit organization headed by pianist Fukushi Miwako herself as Artistic Director.

Established in 2003, M-Project aims to contribute to the local music scene through educational programs, masters workshops featuring noted musicians and musicologists, as well as concert recitals to introduce and to excite appreciation for classical music.

The Classical Concert Series is M-Project's first concert initiative and the piano duo recital its first performance, organized in cooperation with the Hungarian Embassy, the Japanese Embassy, the Yogyakarta Arts Institute, Yayasan Musik Internasional and The Daily Jakarta Shimbun.

The recital will be held on Monday, March 1, 2004, at the Erasmus Huis auditorium, Jl. HR Rasuna Said Kav. S-3, Kuningan, Jakarta 12950, at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are available through Yayasan Musik Internasional at 7503729, 75905639; adults Rp 50,000; students/children Rp 20,000. Adult tickets will be available at the door on the day of the recital.
