Japanese Defense Minister Plans Indonesia Visit Next Week

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Japanese Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi is considering a visit to Indonesia to hold talks with his counterpart, Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin, in a push to strengthen bilateral security cooperation.

Sources familiar with the matter indicate the trip will likely take place on September 10, 2026, amid intensifying Chinese military activity across the Indo-Pacific region, as reported by Antara.

Koizumi, who previously traveled to Indonesia in May and June, is expected to discuss accelerating the planned export of Asagiri-class destroyers to Jakarta alongside Defense Minister Sjafrie.

The Japanese government is also exploring options to arrange a courtesy call on Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto as part of Minister Koizumi’s visit.

Additionally, Koizumi is expected to meet with Japan Self-Defense Forces personnel deployed to Indonesia on an international emergency relief mission assisting in forest fire suppression.
