Japanese brands dominate Indonesian car sales in July 2026, but Chinese rivals gain ground
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Sales of four-wheeled vehicles in July 2026 remained dominated by Japanese brands, which continue to hold the top positions. However, Chinese marques are beginning to strengthen their foothold, with one successfully breaking into the top five.
According to data from the Association of Indonesian Automotive Industries (GAIKINDO) released on Wednesday, Toyota remained the brand with the highest retail sales throughout July 2026, recording 21,008 units. Daihatsu secured second place with sales of 12,750 units, while Mitsubishi Motors ranked third with 6,041 units, followed by Suzuki with 5,844 units.
The most notable change was seen in fifth position. BYD posted retail sales of 5,240 units, surpassing Honda, which fell to sixth place with 3,707 units. This achievement underscores the growing presence of Chinese brands in the Indonesian market. Geely ranked eighth with 1,939 units, while Japanese and Korean brands were represented by Hyundai with 1,451 units and Wuling with 1,407 units.
Combined, the top ten brands on the list recorded retail sales of 62,587 units in July 2026. The figures indicate that sales remain heavily concentrated among a few key players, particularly Toyota and Daihatsu. Toyota’s dominance is not a new phenomenon; previous GAIKINDO data showed the brand maintaining the top spot in both retail sales and distribution throughout early 2026. As of May 2026, Toyota’s retail sales were the highest, while the total retail market from January to May reached 359,490 units, representing an 8.8 per cent year-on-year increase.
Nevertheless, the entry of three Chinese brands—BYD, Jaecoo, and Geely—into the top ten in July signals that the competitive map is becoming increasingly diverse. Consumers now have more choices, and competition among brands is expected to intensify heading into the second half of 2026.
