Japanese bomb found

JAYAPURA, Irian Jaya: A medium-sized bomb left by Japanese troops during the World War II has been found intact in Sowi, Manokwari regency.

Manokwari police chief Major Tjahjo Hernoadi said the 2.5 ton bomb was found protruding from the earth's surface.

He said that efforts to disarm the bomb were hampered by the shortage of equipment.

Manokwari was the base of Ally troops during the war, and it was believed that the bomb was dropped by the Japanese to conquer the area. The bomb failed to explode, Antara reported. (par)
