Japanese Airport to Use Pokémon Name to Attract Tourists
Tokyo (ANTARA) - The Japanese government will add the name “Pokémon” to Noto Airport in Ishikawa Prefecture, central Japan, renaming it “Noto Satoyama Pokémon With You” from July 7th of this year until September 30th, 2029.
As reported by Kyodo on Thursday (May 14th) local time, this effort is being made to revitalise the Noto Peninsula region, which was struck by a major earthquake on New Year’s Day 2024 and heavy rain on the same day. It is also an attempt by the local government to provide a pleasant experience for children in Noto.
“I want to provide a fun experience for children in Noto and boost their spirits as much as possible,” said Ishikawa Governor Yukiyoshi Yamano.
The airport, located in the city of Wajima, is currently known as Noto Satoyama Airport. Satoyama refers to a rural ecosystem consisting of fields and forests shaped by local communities.
The Pokémon airport will feature at least 111 characters and offer a shop with exclusive merchandise.
In addition to the airport, other projects are being implemented in the disaster-affected areas, including the installation of Pokémon-themed manhole covers and the opening of a foot-washing facility decorated with Pokémon characters.
