Tokyo — Japan’s Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi called for the cessation of actions threatening safe passage along the Strait of Hormuz during a telephone conversation with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi on Tuesday, according to Japan’s Foreign Ministry.

This was the second conversation between Motegi and Araghchi since the United States and Israel conducted airstrikes against Iran in late February. The two ministers had previously spoken on 9 March.

The discussion took place ahead of a planned visit by Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi to Washington to meet with U.S. President Donald Trump.

Motegi expressed concern over the detention of several Japan-related vessels in the Persian Gulf amid regional conflict. He requested that Tehran take appropriate measures to ensure the safety of navigation through this vital energy corridor.

Since the conflict escalated, Iran has reportedly blockaded much of the Strait of Hormuz, affecting global energy markets.

Japan itself relies on the Middle East for over 90 per cent of its crude oil imports.

According to the ministry, Araghchi outlined Iran’s position. Meanwhile, Motegi also urged the cessation of attacks against civilian facilities and requested the release of two Japanese nationals detained in Iran.

Both parties agreed to continue communications to help ease the situation.
