Japan identifies Indonesia as a top long-term investment destination, with strong opportunities in automotive, manufacturing, and other key sectors.
Recent Indonesia-Japan agreements worth USD 23 billion highlight growing business ties, expanding private-sector investment commitments.
RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia is emerging as a major destination for long-term foreign investment, with Japanese officials highlighting strong opportunities across multiple sectors, particularly in the automotive industry.
Charge d’Affaires ad interim of the Japanese Embassy in Jakarta, Myochin Mitsuru, said the country is among the most promising for long-term investment over the next decade.
“Indonesia is the third most promising country for long-term investment, I mean over the next decade,” Myochin said during a media discussion at the Japanese Embassy in Jakarta on Thursday, April 23, 2026, as quoted by Antara.
He noted that many Japanese companies view Indonesia as a highly attractive destination for sustained investment. Among the sectors with strong potential, the automotive industry stands out as one of the most promising.
Rubber and plastic products, real estate, manufacturing, and food industries are also considered attractive areas for Japanese investment. “Therefore, we expect that a wide range of investments will be carried out by Japanese companies in Indonesia,” he said.
Myochin’s remarks followed a summit meeting between President Prabowo Subianto and Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi in Tokyo last month, which resulted in significant Japanese investment commitments to Indonesia.
In addition to meeting the Japanese prime minister, President Prabowo also attended a business seminar in Tokyo involving private sector companies from both Indonesia and Japan.
Numerous memorandums of understanding (MoUs) were signed, all on a business-to-business (B2B) basis, with a total value of around USD 23 billion (approximately IDR 397.6 trillion).
“So, a significant amount of project funding has been committed by Japanese companies for investment in Indonesia,” Myochin concluded. ***
