Japan Provides Rp7.5 Billion in Heavy Equipment Aid for Aceh Disaster Mitigation

The Japanese government has reaffirmed its commitment to the people of Aceh through its Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Project. The aid, focused on disaster mitigation, was channelled via the Japanese Consulate General in Medan, North Sumatra. The assistance comprises eight units of heavy equipment, consisting of four dump trucks and four excavators, with a total value of Rp7.5 billion. The inauguration and handover ceremony took place solemnly at the SMA Lab School Hall of Syiah Kuala University (USK) on Wednesday (1/7). Prof. Marwan, Chairman of the Syiah Kuala Laboratory School Foundation, expressed deep appreciation and gratitude to the Japanese government. He stated that the aid is not merely operational equipment but a symbol of the strong emotional bond between Aceh and Japan, which has been forged since the aftermath of the 2004 tsunami. ‘Alhamdulillah, this assistance will be immediately distributed to support the handling of disaster-affected areas in Aceh. The closeness between the people of Aceh and Japan has been tested by time, and Japan has always been present to accompany us in difficult situations. We have coordinated with the implementation team so that these units can immediately operate in the field,’ said Prof. Marwan, who is also a former Rector of USK. Japanese Consul General in Medan, Furugori Tori, stated that this assistance is a tangible manifestation of the Japanese people’s concern for Indonesia, particularly Aceh, which has a high vulnerability to natural disasters. ‘Natural disasters not only destroy infrastructure but also cripple economic activity. Investment in preparedness is a crucial step. We believe that improving rapid response capabilities can reduce the impact of losses and accelerate recovery,’ said Furugori Tori. He expressed hope that the eight units could be utilised optimally and maintained properly for the benefit of the wider community. The support was also welcomed positively by Syiah Kuala University as a strategic step in strengthening disaster mitigation. USK Vice Rector for Student Affairs and Entrepreneurship, Dr. Rina Suryani Oktari, stressed the vital role of educational institutions in ensuring the sustainability of humanitarian programmes. ‘This assistance is a valuable asset to increase Aceh’s resilience to disasters. For USK, this not only strengthens response capabilities in the field but also serves as momentum for students and the academic community to be more actively involved in real disaster mitigation practices,’ Rina explained. The handover ceremony was marked by a ribbon-cutting procession, symbolising the commencement of operational synergy between the SMA Lab School Foundation and the Japanese Government in safeguarding the Aceh region from future disaster threats.
