Japan gives $4.05m grant for RI police

JAKARTA: The government of Japan announced on Thursday a Rp 40.8 billion (US$4.05 million) aid facility to help finance the Indonesian National Police's capacity-building program.

Japanese Ambassador to Indonesia Yutaka Iimura and secretary- general of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs signed the agreement on the grant facility, which is expected to enhance the investigative capabilities of the local police force, including in counterterrorism efforts.

The capacity-building program has been a core part of the reform drive launched by the National Police. The government of Japan, based on a request from the government of Indonesia, has also been supporting the reform efforts by sending an advisor to the National Police chief and receiving many police officers for training in Japan. -- JP
