Japan emphasises ASEAN centrality amidst geopolitical tensions
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Japan has reaffirmed its support for the centrality and unity of ASEAN amidst rising geopolitical tensions, assessing that ASEAN’s role is increasingly vital in maintaining stability and promoting dialogue and cooperation within the region. This statement was made by the Japanese Ambassador to ASEAN, Yonetani Koji, during an interview with ANTARA as part of the International Corner programme in Jakarta on Thursday (30/7).
“Japan remains committed to fully supporting ASEAN centrality and unity, as well as the regional architecture established by ASEAN,” he said. Ambassador Yonetani assessed that ASEAN holds an increasingly important role amidst the rapidly changing international landscape and escalating geopolitical tensions. According to him, a regional architecture that places ASEAN at the centre provides an essential framework for countries in the wider region to engage in open and honest dialogue, while simultaneously building concrete cooperation.
He stated that such dialogue and cooperation are necessary to build mutual understanding and strengthen strategic trust amidst the changing global situation. “This type of dialogue and cooperation is much needed at this time to build mutual understanding and strengthen strategic trust in an ever-evolving world,” he said.
Furthermore, Yonetical stated that Japan has taken a more active role in regional cooperation, consistently maintaining its path as a peace-loving nation since the end of the Second World War. Regarding defence cooperation, the Japanese diplomat emphasised that Japan has established guidelines based on the principles of heart-to-heart cooperation, tailored and sustainable cooperation, and equal and open cooperation.
Japan, he continued, has contributed to global peace and prosperity in various ways, including providing official development assistance and participating in peacekeeping operations. “Particularly in this region, Japan has contributed to peacebuilding efforts in Cambodia and Timor-Leste. Therefore, Japan remains determined to continue contributing to global peace and stability, and certainly to the region as well,” said Yonetani.
