Japan beats Indonesia in sweeps for Davis Cup placing

SAPPORO, Japan (AP): Japan beat Indonesia in both singles matches yesterday for a 5-0 record in the three-day first round in Group One of the Davis Cup Asia-Oceania Zone.

On Saturday, Japan already clinched a place in the second round of the competition by winning a doubles match for a 3-0 lead.

In the first match Sunday, Takao Suzuki defeated Andrian Raturandang 6-1, 6-4, 6-4 at Tsukisamu Green Dome in northern Japan.

In the other match, Goichi Motomura beat Dede Suhendar Dinata 6-1, 6-3, 6-2. (kph)[

Elsewhere in Buenos Aires, Argentina, the host team took an unbeatable 3-0 lead over Colombia in Davis Cup competition Saturday, as Lucas Arnold-Luis Lobo defeated Miguel Tobon- Philippe Moggio 6-2, 7-5, 6-1.

Argentina will play Chile, whose team includes recent Australian Open finalist Marcelo Rios, for Group One of the America Zone in April.

In Friday's singles, Arnold defeated Mario Rincon 6-0, 6-2, 6- 2 and Franco Squillari beat Tobon 6-2, 6-1, 6-1.

The competition ends Sunday with reverse singles at the Mayling Club de Campo, 40 miles (60 kms) north of Buenos Aires.

In Helsinki, Finland Tuomas Ketola and Ville Liukko, Finland, defeated Sasa Hirszon and Ivan Ljubicic, Croatia, 6-2, 3-6, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the doubles.

The winner of the tie will meet France in the second round.
