Japan and India pledge to secure stable energy supplies

Japan and India have agreed to cooperate to ensure stable supplies of energy and critical materials for Southeast Asia and South Asia, according to the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi, in India to attend the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (QUAD) foreign ministers’ meeting, held talks with his Indian counterpart, Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, on Monday.

The meeting lasted approximately one hour, after which both foreign ministers attended a dinner.

“They also reaffirmed that Japan and India would collaborate to ensure stable supplies of energy and critical materials in Southeast Asia and South Asia,” the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated in a press release on Monday night.

The two sides also discussed the situation in the Indo-Pacific and Middle East regions and reiterated their commitment to maintaining close communication, including on issues related to ensuring free and secure navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, the statement added.

The ministers also agreed to accelerate cooperation in economic security, including strengthening supply chains for critical materials, and collaboration in investment, innovation, defence, and security.
