Japan amazed by 'pecalang'
DENPASAR, Bali: Thirty-five Japanese police officers are
studying the Balinese traditional security guards called
pecalang.
Led by Superintendent Hidaki, the Japanese police officers met
with Bali Police chief Brig. Gen. Budi Setyawan Thursday to
express their desire to study Bali's traditional security system.
Hidaki said he was amazed by the role of pecalang in assisting
the security authorities in Bali, the country's most popular
resort island.
"We are willing to learn about this pecalang model of a
traditional security force," he said.
Hidaki said his group wanted to know how the pecalang was
established and recruited its members so as to become effective
in helping ensure security and order in Bali. --Antara
