Jamie Carragher Criticises Liverpool: Too Many Weak Players...
Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has launched a scathing critique of his former club’s performance after their 4-2 defeat to Aston Villa in the Premier League on Friday evening (15 May 2026) local time, or Saturday morning WIB.
The defeat in the Aston Villa vs Liverpool match was The Reds’ 12th in the league this season, also extending their poor record against top teams in away matches.
The team coached by Arne Slot has now conceded 52 goals in the Premier League throughout the 2025-2026 season, the most in Liverpool’s history in the 38-match competition format.
“Liverpool has too many weak players, both physically and mentally, and that needs to be fixed,” Carragher said on Sky Sports.
“It seems that Arne Slot will be the one who has to fix all of this next season,” he added.
According to Carragher, Liverpool’s problem is not just about the results of the matches, but also the loss of the identity of the game that has long been the club’s main strength.
“Liverpool is not good at anything. They look like a very ordinary team. They have been completely destroyed,” said Carragher.
He said that the bad trend had actually been seen since the beginning of the season.
“This has been happening since the first match of the season against Bournemouth,” he said.
The only positive result they achieved when visiting these teams was a goalless draw against Arsenal in January.
Carragher believes that Liverpool’s poor away record reflects the team’s character problem.
“When I look at results like that, I always think that it reflects the personality and character of the team,” he said.
He even admitted that he was surprised that Liverpool was still in fifth place in the Premier League standings.
“I really can’t believe Liverpool is in fifth place in the league. With that many goals conceded, they never looked dangerous when attacking, and then looking at their away record,” said Carragher.
The former England defender also highlighted the performance of Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk, who is no longer performing as dominantly as in previous seasons.
“This is the first season I’ve seen Van Dijk look like a normal human being and that has an impact on the other players,” he said.
“When Van Dijk is not at his best, you would expect the other players to help and take more responsibility. But that didn’t happen,” said Carragher.
