Jambi Corrections Office Partners with Baznas to Empower Inmates in Home Renovation

The Jambi Regional Office of the Directorate General of Corrections (Kanwil Ditjenpas), through the Muara Bulian Class IIB Correctional Facility, has partnered with the Batanghari National Zakat Agency (Baznas) to renovate the house of a local resident deemed financially disadvantaged. The renovation process involved ten inmates as construction workers.

According to a statement received on Tuesday (4/8/2026), this marks the sixth occasion the Jambi Ditjenpas office has carried out a house renovation programme targeting underprivileged residents. The programme is an implementation of the accelerated programme by the Minister of Immigration and Corrections, Agus Andrianto, who has directed that prisons should contribute to the surrounding community.

The beneficiary of this sixth renovation project is Misro, who works as a goat herder. The renovation of Misro’s house took 12 days to complete. The ten inmates deployed to assist with the renovation were selected based on their carpentry skills.

“This programme is not just about building a decent house, but also about building hope. The inmates are given the opportunity to implement the skills they have acquired during their rehabilitation programmes,” said Ilham Santoso, Head of the Muara Bulian Class IIB Correctional Facility.

“Through direct involvement in social activities like this, they learn that every ability they possess can benefit others. We hope this experience will be a valuable asset when they return to society,” he added.

Ilham also expressed his gratitude to Baznas and other parties who assisted in renovating Misro’s house. He stressed that collaboration is the key to delivering benefits to the community. “Collaboration is the main key to providing real benefits. When the government, social institutions, and the community unite, various social issues can be overcome together,” he said. “This spirit of mutual cooperation is what we want to continue to build through various impactful correctional programmes.”

Meanwhile, the Head of the Jambi Regional Office of the Directorate General of Corrections, Irwan Rahmat Gumilar, expressed his hope that the work carried out by his office would not only be seen as building a house, but also as building hope for citizens to live more decently. “Through this collaboration, we are not just building a decent house, but also building new hope,” said Irwan.

Irwan explained that the inmates’ involvement in the renovation process is proof that rehabilitation within correctional facilities can shape individuals to be productive and responsible. Furthermore, he said, it demonstrates their readiness to contribute positively to society. “This kind of synergy must continue to be maintained. When the government, social institutions, the business world, and the community walk together, the benefits will be felt widely,” Irwan explained.

He expressed hope to continue partnering with Baznas and relevant stakeholders so that this social action can inspire others. “We hope this collaboration will continue to grow and become an inspiration for the birth of various other social programmes that have a real impact on the community,” Irwan concluded.
