Jambi anticipates drug trafficker's trial
JAMBI: Jambi Governor Zulkifli Nurdin said on Friday that he
was awaiting the trial of 54-year-old Acong, who is charged with
trafficking 1,000 ecstasy pills in the city, adding that this
would be a test of law enforcers' determination to fight the war
against narcotics.
"Acong's case will be used to measure the law enforcers'
seriousness in the fight against illegal drugs and banned
substances in the province," he said.
Acong is being interrogated by police and is locally known as
the "ecstasy king" for his alleged role in supplying the illegal
drug to the province.
The governor said prosecutors and judges had no reason to hand
down a light sentence because the police had strong evidence to
back accusations that the suspect violated the law on narcotics
and psychotropic drugs.
He said he would support the death penalty should the judges
hand down the maximum punishment to Acong, considering the large
number of ecstasy pills found on him by officers. --Antara
