Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Central Jakarta City Government is urging residents to start sorting and selecting waste as a precaution against the impending restrictions on waste disposal to the Bantargebang Integrated Waste Treatment Site in August. “The waste problem must be addressed by reducing it at the source, because unwittingly we all generate waste,” said Central Jakarta Mayor Arifin in Jakarta on Tuesday, during an Evening Community Gathering with residents of Pasar Baru Ward held at the ANTARA Heritage Center. The DKI Jakarta Provincial Government will limit waste disposal at the Bantargebang TPST in August, reducing the usual daily shipment of more than 8,000 tonnes. Therefore, Arifin asked residents to get into the habit of reducing waste from the source and not to dispose of all used items or leftovers in the bin. “Waste shipments to Bantargebang can no longer be as usual. Later, only half can be sent,” he said. Arifin also encouraged residents to reduce waste production, for example by bringing their own drink containers when travelling, as plastic bottles are a major contributor to waste. In addition, for events, Arifin said cardboard boxes should be avoided by using plates or containers that do not generate waste instead. “Wherever I go now, I bring a tumbler; this is our campaign effort to reduce waste. Snacks also do not use boxes; this is all part of reducing waste,” he said.
