Jakbar Branded as Gotham City, DKI Jakarta DPRD Member Kenneth: I Will Be Batman

Rising street crime, especially robberies in West Jakarta (Jakbar), has sparked public anxiety and prompted social media to dub the area ‘Gotham City’ — a reference to the Batman mythos famed for crime in a fictional metropolis.
In response, Hardiyanto Kenneth, a member of the DKI Jakarta Provincial DPRD from the PDI Perjuangan faction, decided to take action by initiating a cross-sector meeting through Ngobrol Bareng Forkopimko (NGOPI) at the West Jakarta City Hall.
The man known as Bang Kent appreciated the swift response from West Jakarta Mayor Iin Mutmainnah, the police, the military, and the Muspiko team in organising this NGOPI. The aim is to find a way out together so that the begal phenomenon in West Jakarta can be mitigated effectively and the public can feel safe again when outside, at work, or returning home at night,
‘Today I appreciate the quick response of West Jakarta Mayor Iin Mutmainnah, the Police, the Army, and Muspiko for organising this NGOPI. The objective is good, to find a solution together so that the begal phenomenon in West Jakarta can be mitigated properly and the community can feel safe when going out, working, or returning home at night,’ Kent said in a statement on Saturday (23 May 2026).
According to him, security in the region cannot be left to the police alone; it requires collaboration among local government, security agencies, business, and the public. He sees the rise in street crime as a moment to reinforce Jakarta Barat’s integrated security system.
‘If the public call West Jakarta ’Gotham City’, this is certainly a warning bell for us all. It means fear and anxiety are truly felt by residents. We must not let people lose their sense of security when leaving home, working, or returning at night,’ said the Commission C member of the DKI Jakarta DPRD.
Kent also joked, but seriously, by likening himself to ‘Batman’, who will continuously monitor the security conditions in West Jakarta.
‘As a legislator in Kebon Sirih, I try to position myself as the ’Batman’ who will always monitor what happens in West Jakarta for the comfort, safety, and welfare of West Jakarta residents, in accordance with my oversight role in the DKI Jakarta DPRD,’ he added.
He stressed that monitoring of crime hotspots in West Jakarta must be tightened, especially on roads with poor lighting and surveillance. He noted that most robberies and other crimes occur on public roads rather than in office complexes or large buildings with adequate security.
‘Therefore I request a detailed mapping of crime hotspots. With such mapping, police can conduct routine patrols and extra guards at vulnerable hours. The presence of security personnel on the ground is crucial for a preventive effect,’ said IKAL (Alumni Association of Lemhannas RI) PPRA LXII Director.
Kent also urged optimising surveillance technology through CCTV installation at strategic and crime-prone locations. He said CCTV procurement can be achieved through a collaboration scheme and by optimising CSR funds from private companies or state-owned enterprises (BUMD).
‘If procurement of CCTV is to be cheaper and more efficient, it can be done through a rental scheme. The route could be via CSR from those who want to aid security, or it could also involve BUMD. So we install CCTV at key points where robberies and brawls frequently occur,’ he said.
Moreover, Kent hopes the mitigation steps taken with the Forkopimko will not be merely ceremonial, but followed by concrete and sustainable actions.
‘The most important thing is follow-up. We want regular evaluations, more intensive patrols, improved street lighting, and a functional surveillance system. I want West Jakarta to be known again as a safe and comfortable area for residents,’ he concluded. (H-3)
