Jakarta's Viral 'Love-Hate Relationship' Pedestrian Bridge to Be Demolished
Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung has decided to demolish one of the older pedestrian footbridges (JPO) that went viral under the nickname ‘Love-Hate Relationship’ on Jalan HR Rasuna Said, Kuningan, South Jakarta.
“After discussing with the Head of the Bina Marga Agency, the South Jakarta Mayor, the Transportation Agency, and also the Kominfotik Agency, I have decided that this one footbridge will be demolished,” Pramono said after visiting the footbridge on Jalan HR Rasuna Said, Kuningan, South Jakarta, Sunday (9/8/2026).
The decision was taken after Pramono and his team directly inspected the condition of the two footbridges that had previously drawn public attention and gone viral on social media for being described as having a ‘Love and Hate’ concept.
According to Pramono, the inspection showed that the two footbridges essentially serve the same function, namely as public crossing facilities, while also supporting access to transport facilities, including Light Rail Transit (LRT) services.
However, there is a fundamental difference in the age and design of the two footbridges. One footbridge is a facility built by the Jakarta Provincial Government long ago, while the other is a newer facility linked to the LRT and KAI.
“The one built by the Jakarta Provincial Government is older; if you look at the design, it is certainly a design from the 1980s or early 1990s. Meanwhile, the one by the LRT and KAI is newer,” Pramono explained.
Pramono also assessed that the existence of two footbridges with the same function points to a problem in past public facility development policy.
“But after I saw it myself, this shows that in the past, policy-making was often, as I have said, driven by leaders’ egos that were not communicated properly. So in fact both of them have exactly the same function,” Pramono said.
Therefore, Pramono stressed that the old footbridge owned by the Jakarta Provincial Government will be demolished, while the newer footbridge will be retained and its facilities improved.
