Jakarta's Transportation Becomes Increasingly Crowded as MRT, LRT, and TransJakarta Passenger Numbers Rise
JAKARTA - Statistics Indonesia (BPS) for DKI Jakarta recorded an annual increase in the number of passengers for all major public transport modes in the capital in March 2026. The increases occurred for MRT Jakarta, LRT Jakarta, and TransJakarta, with growth rates of 9.03 per cent, 27.10 per cent, and 7.67 per cent respectively compared to the same period the previous year. “In March 2026, MRT Jakarta and TransJakarta transport modes showed positive annual growth,” said the Head of BPS DKI Jakarta, Kadarmanto, in Jakarta on Monday (4/5/2026), quoted from Antara. From an operational perspective, the number of MRT trips reached 7,911, up 9.73 per cent monthly but down 1.89 per cent compared to March 2025. Meanwhile, LRT Jakarta recorded the highest percentage growth. The number of passengers in March 2026 reached 114,670 people, up 27.10 per cent annually and 11.05 per cent monthly. “The number of LRT Jakarta trips reached 6,324, increasing 10.71 per cent monthly and showing no change compared to March 2025,” Kadarmanto stated. From the fleet side, BPS DKI recorded 4,792 TransJakarta buses operating in March 2026. This number rose 4.22 per cent monthly but fell 2.82 per cent annually.
