Jakarta's Strategy to Combat Climate Change: Green Spaces and Waste Segregation
Governor of DKI Jakarta Pramono Anung Wibowo has outlined a series of measures being taken to address the challenges of climate change in Jakarta. He made the statement during the 499th anniversary ceremony of DKI Jakarta at Monas on Monday (22/6). The addition of green open spaces and the construction of water catchment areas are among the steps being taken. “In response to these conditions, the addition of green open spaces, expansion of clean water access, construction of catchment areas, flood control, and the development of urban farming are being carried out as mitigation and adaptation measures,” said Pramono. Pramono stated that environmental strengthening is also a focus of the government today. He said Jakarta must remain clean, liveable, and sustainable in the future. Pramono noted that the challenges of climate change are increasingly real today. He also touched on the potential El Niño phenomenon, which could trigger extreme dry seasons and impact many factors. “It affects food security, the availability of clean water, and overall community economic activity,” he said. In addition, Pramono also addressed the issue of waste in Jakarta. He stated that the waste problem must not become a legacy issue for Jakarta. He promoted the waste segregation movement to protect Jakarta from future waste problems. “Approaching Jakarta’s 5th century, we must not pass the waste problem on to the next generation. Therefore, the waste segregation movement continues to be encouraged as a collective movement starting from home,” he said.
