Jakarta's Labour-Intensive Programme Sees 100,000 Applicants in Just Days
Public enthusiasm for the Jakarta Provincial Government’s labour-intensive programme has surged sharply. Only a few days after opening, the programme has already attracted 100,000 applicants.
Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung assessed that the high level of public interest serves as a signal that the social safety net prepared by the Jakarta Provincial Government is much needed amidst the economic pressures still being felt by the community.
“For the Labour-Intensive programme, once again, there are 2,843 positions. To address concerns regarding nepotism, I have stated that there must be no playing around. It must be transparent and open, as it is being monitored and awaited by the people of Jakarta,” said Pramono in Central Jakarta on Sunday (21/6).
Meanwhile, the Head of the Communication and Information Office, Marulina Dewi, explained that the labour-intensive programme has opened 37 different types of job vacancies to date. As of today, the number of applicants has reached approximately 100,000 people.
“For the Labour-Intensive programme, 37 job vacancies have been opened, and as of today, there are indeed 100,000 applicants. The first registration session will close on 25 June and results will be announced on 27 June,” said Dewi.
According to her, following the first-stage announcement on 27 June, the Jakarta Provincial Government will reopen the next registration session on the same day to provide opportunities for those who were not accommodated in the first round.
The surge in applicants indicates the high demand for employment opportunities, particularly short-term jobs that can provide additional income amidst global economic uncertainty.
Furthermore, there have been proposals to collaborate the Labour-Intensive Programme with Internship Programmes currently being encouraged by the central government. Based on e-Monitoring data from the Ministry of Public Works (PU), the Directorate General of Highways has implemented labour-intensive programmes absorbing 48,651 workers. The government has decided to continue stimulus in the labour-intensive transport and public works sectors to boost economic growth.
