Jakarta's Inequality Remains High, Pramono: Regional Residents' Money Circulates Widely in Jakarta

Governor of DKI Jakarta, Pramono Anung, has spotlighted the persistently high economic inequality in the capital, despite several macroeconomic indicators showing relatively good economic conditions. This is reflected in Jakarta’s Gini Ratio, which remains around 0.41.

According to Pramono, the high inequality is partly influenced by the concentration of asset ownership and large funds stored in Jakarta, even though not all owners reside in the capital.

“Almost all the big money is owned by Jakarta people, even if some live in Surabaya, Bali, and so on. But on average, they keep their money or its distribution in Jakarta,” Pramono said during the Development Planning Consultation (Musrenbang) at City Hall on Thursday (16/4/2026).

However, he assessed that this growth has not yet been fully felt evenly by all society.

“This is the main problem, inequality is still high,” he stated.

To address this situation, the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government will focus policies on economic redistribution. One step taken is to maintain social assistance and education programmes.

Pramono emphasised that the Kartu Jakarta Pintar (KJP) and Kartu Jakarta Mahasiswa Unggul (KJMU) programmes will not undergo changes.

According to him, the education sector is the main key to suppressing economic inequality and improving societal social mobility.

“If you want to reduce inequality, the key is in education,” he explained.

In the future, Pramono stressed that Jakarta should not only pursue economic growth but also ensure that development results can be felt more evenly by all residents.

“Growth is important, but redistribution must also be a concern,” he said.
