Jakarta's development

The Jakarta administration, under Governor Sutiyoso, is trying
to turn Jakarta into a city without slums.

It is also trying to ease acute traffic congestion in the
capital city by introducing a mass rapid transportation system,
known as the busway.

Of course, the Jakarta administration can build hundreds of
high-rise buildings, overpasses and busway lanes but it must
never forget that problems facing poor people in Jakarta must be
solved properly to pave the way for these development
undertakings. The Jakarta administration should stop bulldozing
the homes of some of its residents in the name of development at
the expense of some of its residents, who have often shed blood
in defending their rights.

Jakarta does not need a facelift. The problems that it
currently faces must be solved properly and patiently before
anything can be done to beautify it.
