Jakarta's Bina Marga: No Compensation Agreement Yet for Tendean Footbridge Hit by Truck
The DKI Jakarta Provincial Bina Marga Agency has stated that, to date, there has been no agreement regarding compensation from the company that owns the crane truck which struck the Tendean pedestrian bridge (JPO) in South Jakarta. The agency said the accountability process for the losses incurred has still not reached a settlement. ‘To date, there has been no agreement or compensation mechanism from the company owning the truck transporting the bore pile equipment. The vehicle driver has been detained by the authorities, and further handling will be processed in accordance with applicable legal provisions,’ said Siti Dinarwenny, Head of the Data and Information Centre for the DKI Jakarta Bina Marga Agency, on Tuesday (14/7/2026).
The agency stated there are currently no plans to repair the Tendean footbridge following its dismantling. The decision was made based on a technical assessment which concluded that the bridge structure suffered severe damage and is no longer fit for use. According to Wenny, the condition of the footbridge posed a potential danger to the safety of road users and could disrupt traffic flow if it were to remain in place. ‘The decision was taken based on the results of a technical assessment in the field, where the footbridge structure was deemed to have suffered severe damage, rendering it unfit for operation and potentially endangering the safety of road users and traffic flow in the area,’ she said.
Regarding the reconstruction of the Tendean footbridge, the Bina Marga Agency stated it will first prepare a technical plan in accordance with applicable regulations. As further study is still required, the timeline for reconstruction cannot yet be confirmed. For the time being, the government’s priority is to accelerate the demolition process so that traffic conditions in the Tendean area can return to normal. As a result of the incident, the Bina Marga Agency estimates material losses reaching billions of rupiah. The losses stem not only from damage to government assets, but also from the social impact of disrupted public mobility because the footbridge can no longer be used. ‘The Bina Marga Agency also urges all drivers, particularly those of oversized vehicles or heavy equipment transporters, to comply with vehicle height limit regulations and pay attention to traffic signs,’ she added.
