Jakarta's Air Quality Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups, Government Outlines Mitigation Strategies

Jakarta (ANTARA) - The air quality in Jakarta on Thursday morning, according to the IQAir air quality monitoring site at 06:30 WIB, was unhealthy for sensitive groups.

The air quality index (AQI) of the metropolitan city stood at 137, making it the fourth worst city in the world in terms of air quality.

Members of the public are advised to wear masks when carrying out activities outdoors.

Meanwhile, the city with the worst air quality in the world is Kinshasa (Democratic Republic of the Congo) with an air quality index of 171. This is followed by Lahore (Pakistan) in second place with an index of 152, and Dubai (United Arab Emirates) in third place with an index of 151.

Separately, the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government is implementing three main strategies to improve air quality.

The second strategy targets the operation of 10,000 electric Transjakarta buses by 2030, given that the transport sector currently accounts for 50 per cent of exhaust gas emissions in Jakarta.

DKI Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung has invited all residents to make use of the public transport services provided by the provincial government. The administration has even issued regulations providing free public transport services for 15 categories of residents.

The third strategy is to optimise the use of the Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF) waste processing facility in Rorotan, North Jakarta.
